FAQs
Define a last-minute move - is there a certain amount of time you'd need for a consulting client?
I would say about two to three hours for a consulting client this includes gathering all their information (place of origin, place of destination, general inventory list). Then getting an idea of their budget and three or so estimates for them to choose from.
Explain local moves - certain mile restriction? What about Rock Hill to Charlotte or vice versa?
Any local move nation wide is defined as 50 miles from destination to origin. I would consider a move from Rock Hill to Charlotte local by miles but you need to make sure the moving company is licensed to cross state lines.
Explain long-distance moves - crossing state borders?
Long distance moves are more than 50 miles from origin to destination so Charlotte to Winston Salem or Charlotte to Greensboro would technically count as one but more than often a long distance move does cross state lines.
Do all partners have a background check (movers/packers/organizers)? Are all of them insured?
I will do my own background on all partners I hire and make sure they are registered with the state and have proper insurance. I will ask them for their COI (certificate of insurance) and make sure they have the proper licenses.
For a consulting client - is there a certain number of quotes you guarantee you'll provide them? If so, how many?
I would say two three quotes on each individual partner, whether it’s packers or auto transport but three quotes minimum on the mover or company who will be transporting their household goods. I will for sure recommend the best partner for each of the services but the customer will have the final say.
Concierge client - With the professional movers, packers/unpackers, organizers, and others - is there any training or certification to mention for the partners you work with? Any special things they do and/or provide?
The specific partner will need to have a certain amount of insurance and be licensed to operate based on their local laws and I’ll ask for proof of that but may do my own “partner form” in the future to make sure they meet my qualifications.
Explain coordinating temporary storage (concierge client) - Is that PODS or anything specific?
PODS are a variant of the moving company or transportation partner, temporary storage is a storage facility that allows the client personal access to their items such as Public Storage and any other self storage facility.
What types of items would you recommend for specialty packing and crating?
These items include items such as high end art, mirrors, clocks, pool table slates and chandeliers. Crate items are usually high value pieces that should not be in moving boxes alone and need more sturdy protection during transit.
Can a client select the type of crating material their items will be crated in? If so, what are the options?
Most “crated” material is custom made wooden enclosures but yes in terms of protection the method of crated materials will be approved by the customer. Crates are made by hand on site and not built by a manufacturer.
Auto transport - Any certifications/licensing/guarantees behind the partner that will provide this service? Explain the process for the transport. Does the client take their car somewhere? Is it picked up, etc.?
Auto transport providers will have specific insurance for what they are transporting. Depending on the car they will be transporting the carriers insurance will vary but to give an example the carrier moving ferraris will have a much higher insurance coverage than one move suburbans or a honda civic. There are many types of auto carriers including open air and enclosed trailers. The car is picked up at the residence and dropped off at their new residence.
Explain the process of selling items that won't be moved. What can clients expect to happen?
The clients will give me a description of the item including images and the approximate value based off the amount they purchased it for. I will reach out to the consignor and get their opinion on the piece. Also as an example you don’t consign certain things such as IKEA furniture and other furniture made of poor material but can sell them online in certain markets such as facebook marketplace etc.
Pros/cons of having you onsite during packing/unpacking and loading/unloading of the truck
- The only cons are paying me by the hour to be there instead of just paying me by the hour for the amount of time I spend organizing the services like paying your lawyer by the hour for what they spend on your case.
- There are an endless list of pros and not limited to but including: making sure proper services show up on time and pack the right items, proper placement of items, supervision for the customer so they don’t have to be there (like a personal assistant, a pair of eyes to work with personal designers and home organizers.
Coordinating rehanging items at the new home - Explain this process. What can the client expect?
I will research the proper organization in the specific area of the country and make sure items are mounted in their proper place. Keep in mind a lot of the items have extremely high value and need supervision in person whether it’s the client or me.
